Linguistic development:
Since Mollie was two years old, we have practiced sign language with her. Today she is able to communicate with sign language, and she is in the process of learning the verbal language. At this stage, Mollie is able to use few words. Her vocabulary in sign language, her verbal language and her body language enables her to communicate. Mollie has the ability to keep explaining until she’s understood.
Example: Mollie makes to curves in the air. I don’t know what she means. Mollie then shows me the sign for circus and then it occurs to me that she is talking about a camel.
Mollie enjoys and prefers to invite others in her games. This is caused by the fact that she doesn’t have the ability to verbally share her experience with others afterwards.
5 years of age: Mollie is able to put two words together by using the verbal language and sign language.
7 years of age: Mollie still mainly uses sign language. She keeps learning new words and at this stage, she can use about 300 words. Her verbal language is developing very slowly, but it is moving in the right direction. We hope that relieving her diversion will give her energy to focus on developing her verbal language.
Initiatives:
We teach Mollie sign language. Combine the verbal language with sign language. Use the same words and sentences again and again.
